Each lesson in the LEP program is based on an idea from Leopold's essays in
A Sand County Almanac and is used in conjunction with some type of direct experience that correlates with the essay. Below is an example of one lesson.

ESSAY TITLE: "Good Oak"
Subjects: Language Arts, Botany, History

OBJECTIVES:
Students will be able to:
  • Take a tree cross-section and identify some of its important structures.
  • Relate the characteristics of annual growth rings to environmental conditions present at the time of their growth.
  • Use this information to determine the age of a tree and how the annual rings are related to historical events.
