LEP Workshops

The Leopold Education Project (LEP) was conceived and designed to make the excellent writing and science found in A Sand County Almanac more accessible to educators in both formal classroom and informal teaching situations. LEP utilizes hands-on/minds-on activities to combine content knowledge with creative and critical thinking skills that will foster a relationship between students and their natural and cultural environments (collectively "the land"). Three types of workshops provide educators with the necessary background, skills and motivation to utilize the LEP curriculum, Lessons
in a Land Ethic.

Educator In-Service Workshops

Certified LEP facilitators conduct in-service LEP workshops for educators in their communities. These workshops are between 6-8 hours long and are structured by the facilitator to suit participants' needs. Each participant receives essential LEP curricula, and supplementary materials are available through the LEP. English, history, science, art and agriculture teachers, as well as naturalists, rangers, agency personnel, Scout leaders, and youth program leaders benefit from the materials and instruction received at an in-service workshop.

Facilitator Workshops

Leopold Education Project instructors and state coordinators conduct facilitator training workshops throughout the country. These in-depth workshops provide 16 contact hours of instruction in the use of LEP curriculum materials, teaching strategies and facilitation of the program to other educators. Workshop participants investigate Aldo Leopold's land ethic and are encouraged to discuss and examine Leopold's philosophy based on their own values. Participants learn how to "read the land" and explore teaching strategies designed to foster a personal land ethic among their students and other educators. These workshops are designed to prepare participants to not only use the LEP in their own teachings, but also to bring the LEP program to other educators by conducting educator in-service workshops.

LEP Annual National Workshop

Held in cooperation with the Aldo Leopold Foundation, the LEP National Workshop is an annual event designed to further explore the land ethic and provide new skills and insights for participants to utilize in their educational efforts. Participants enjoy a combination of dynamic speakers, hands-on workshops and field tours of the very Sand Counties that inspired Aldo Leopold - including a trip to The Shack. This is an inspiring and exciting event where educators and facilitators gather from across the country and exchange experiences regarding their efforts to further a "land ethic."
