Debbie Ruff - Illinois State Coordinator

Debbie has been the Executive/Education Director for Livingston County Soil and Water Conservation District and the Livingston County Ag Literacy Coordinator since 1991. She provides programs for Pre-K – adult, as well as facilitates educator workshops. Debbie brings her own classroom to every 3rd and 4th grade in the county with “EARTH EXPRESS.” This mobile classroom is a “textbook on wheels” which provides lessons on a variety of environmental topics by utilizing narratives, graphics and hands-on activities. In addition to presentations and workshops, Debbie writes curriculum for a series of self-contained agricultural classroom kits, provides “walk n talks” for a local nature center and serves on several state planning committees.

How long have you been a coordinator?

I was first trained in LEP when the project was being field tested in Illinois by Land Use Council 16. I have been the Illinois LEP Coordinator since 2002.

How are you using LEP?

I use LEP as one way to introduce awareness of your surroundings. By either reading an essay or by just a few key quotes, I introduce even the youngest students to Leopold and his writings. We then use all our senses to discover new things in our surroundings, regardless of whether we are inside or outdoors.

What are your primary goals for the coming year?

My primary goal is to continue introducing students of all ages to the wonders of the natural world.

I think LEP is important because it is a great way to get students to look beyond the end of their noses and to use all of their senses.
